HPC-D accuses Mizoram govt of sabotaging peace talks

Aizawl, Apr 1 (PTI) : Hmar People's Convention - Democrats accused the Mizoram government of attempting to sabotage the ongoing peace dialogue between the outfit and the state government by putting up ''strategic impediments''. In a press statement signed by John F Hmar, publicity secretary of the militant group and e-mailed to the press, the HPC-D alleged that the state government was trying to put forward ''narrow'' pre-conditions for talks and dictate terms by publicly accusing the militant group of including a US citizen in the delegation. "We have never revealed the names of the delegation members, " the statement said, adding that the outfit was well aware of and sensitive to the constitutional proprieties and norms and had never intended to engage any foreigner to represent them in the parleys. State chief minister Lal Thanhawla informed the state assembly that the government-HPC-D talks could not be continued as the outfit intended to have an American citizen in its delegation team and the state home secretary Lalmalsawma also had earlier said the same thing to the media. The HPC-D alleged that the statements made by the chief minister and the home secretary were aimed at nipping the prospect of a democratic dialogue in the bud. Asking the Lal Thanhawla regime to be ''honest'' in future talks, the millitant group said that it condemned any repetition of devisive plot to fragment the Hmar people and deprive them of realising their constitutional rights. The first round of talks between the two party was held on November 11 last when an agreement on bilateral Suspension of Operations (SoO) for six months was signed. The dialogue, however, could not be resumed, as scheduled in January and March, due to a plethora of differences between the two parties.
