At least 15 people, including a child, were killed and several others
were injured when a Mizoram state transport bus fell into a deep gorge
about 123 kms northeast of the state capital today. Police said six
women, a child and the bus driver were among those killed in the
mishap. 'While ten of them died on the spot, five others succumbed
to their injuries at Darlawn hospital,' a source from Darlawn hospital
said. The condition of five of the injured passengers was stated to be
critical, sources added. The bus carrying 34 passengers was
proceeding from Aizawl to Vaitin village near the Manipur border.
Sources said the driver was taking a short cut from a fair-weather road
but it had become slippery following heavy rainfall and the bus fell
into the gorge, about 300 metres from the road. It was still
raining hard when rescue operation was being carried out by Darlawn
police and the locals.
