86 pc of TB patients cured in Mizoram

An encouraging 86 per cent of TB patients detected in Mizoram during last year were cured, health officials said today. During a quarterly review meeting of TB control programme, it was reported that 2300 TB cases were detected during 2011 of which 1978 were cured, recording a 86 per cent cure rate, one of the highest among Indian states. However, bad news was: 167 TB patients were found to be infected with HIV. As many as 495 TB patients were detected from their mucous. During the last quarter of 2011, 511 TB patients were detected, of which 111 patients were detected from their mucous. Speaking at the meeting, director of health services Dr C Lalthanmawia said that DOTS Plus Site for multi drug resistant TB patients was being set up at Falkawn. MDR TB patients will get investigation, treatment and transportation free of cost. He said heavy consumption of tobacco among Mizos was one of the biggest factors of TB prevalence in Mizoram. Dr Vanlalhruaii, who chaired the meeting, said many TB patients failed to take complete course of TB medication which resulted in multi drug resistant TB. She stressed that TB is easily curable is the patient takes medicines regularly. The meeting was presided over by WHO consultant Dr Gautam Borgohain.
