Kolkata, Feb 13 : A whopping 600 variety of roses
are on display at the 192 year-old Agri Horticultural Society
of India (AHSI) here which rpt which is hosting its annual
flower show.
Besides roses, more than 20 different classes and
nearly 200 sections covering palms, ferns, ornamentals plants,
cacti, succulents, vegetables, fruits, herbal plants, roses,
gladioli, have been put up at the show in its 22 acre garden.
Mizoram is showcasing the ornemental anthurium and
perennial flowers, while Meghalaya has sought to catch
attention of the hordes of visitors with its beautiful
carnation, AHSI sources said.
AHSI has dedicated the exhibition this year to its
founder Rev William Carey, an English Baptist missionary, on
his 250th birth anniversary.
AHSI was founded in 1820 and its annual exhibition
started in 1828. It is known for promoting and developing
agriculture and horticulture in the country and its historic
garden is populated by a variety of rare plants.
"The annual exhibition of AHSI is one of the
prestigious events in India. Our effort is to recognise the
large contingent of flower and garden lovers in the state and
elsewhere," said Dr S K Basu, its president.
The four-day exhibition will end on Sunday.
It features competition in formations and different
presentations flower in pot, cut flowers, table decorations
with flowers, feature garden, vertical gardens and vegetables
competition, the sources said.
