Train driver abducted near Assam-Mizoram border

Guwahati, Oct 21 : Suspected militants late last night abducted a train driver and his assistant from a passenger-carrying train when it had stopped for a signal clearance near the Assam-Mizoram border.

However, the assistant driver, Sudhir Kumar Sharma, managed to escape and took the train to safety.

Local reports said that the train, going to Mizoram, had stopped before entering the neighbouring state around 2200 hrs.

A gang of four armed militants boarded the train and kidnapped driver Tarun Kumar Bhattacharyya and his assistant Sudhir.

Sudhir escaped as they were crossing a river and took the train to the nearest railway station in Mizoram.

No passengers were harmed nor any dacoity attempted in the incident.

Police have launched investigations to rescue the abducted train driver.
