Mizoram advises Assam Rifles against drug smuggling

Aizawl, Jun 27 (PTI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today said that he has repeatedly advised the Assam Rifles authorities to be vigilant as majority of the drugs and narcotics were smuggled through the 404-km-long Mizoram-Myanmar international border.Addressing a function on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here, Lal Thanhawla said that people have to cooperate with the government as the drug traffickers, taking advantage of the peaceful situation in Mizoram, use the state as a safe haven.Emphasising the need for prevention of drug abuse among the younger people, he said that the state government has been giving importance to development of skills amongst the youths.The United Nations in 1987 had decided to observe June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, and it was observed here today as the day fell on Sunday this year.
