Aizawl hosts national medical meet

Mizoram Governor Lt General (rtd) M M Lakhera inaugurated a three-day third national continuing medical education programme at Tourist Lodge, Chaltlang here yesterday.

Themed 'glaucoma and cataract amongst unreached population', and organised by the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACON), the meet would see a gathering of renowned ophthalmologists from across the country.

Lauding ACON for organising such an important national meet in a remote state like Mizoram, Lakhera expressed hope that the programme served a dual purpose of bringing medical facilities to the residents of remote places and the chance for those coming from the mainland to see peace prevailing in Mizoram.

Saying that India has witnessed great medical advancement in the past during the days of great Ayurvedic physicians like Charak and Sushruta, Lakhera regretted that modern days medical scientists have failed to research on Indias medical knowledge of the past.

Even though India today has made great achievement in science and has become a hotspot for medical tourism, Lakhera expressed grave concern that medical facilities are still beyond the reach of majority of the countrys population. Saying that the wide gap between the haves and the have-nots has brought about insecurity and conflicts, the governor urged the medical doctors to give more attention to less-privileged sections of the society, who constitute a majority of the population. He hoped that the survey and field study which are parts of the programme would prove greatly beneficial for the people of the remote areas in Mizoram.

During the inaugural function, the Governor gave away certificates of appreciation, sponsored by ACON, to Er Dunglena, Dr Vanlalruata, Dr K L Remsanga, Dr H C Thangkima, and two ophthalmic technicians Rohmingliana, and Lalrinkima, and Sister Lalbeiseii, of Presbyterian Church Hospital, Durtlang, in recognition of their contribution in the field of ophthalmology in Mizoram. Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACON) was founded in 2009, and is affiliated to International Centre for Eye Health, London.
