Huge cache of arms seized in Mizoram

Aizawl, Aug 25 : A joint squad of police, excise and narcotics and Assam Rifles in Mizoram's Champhai near Myanmar border seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition today and arrested one person.

Police sources from Champhai said the squad recovered three .32 pistols (made in Italy and Czech Republic) and four magazines, 29 rounds of ammunition and five empty cartridges, one shotgun, one G-3 machine gun and its magazine, seven rounds of .22 pistols ammunition, an empty magazine of SLR rifle, four magazines of .32 pistol and six magazines of unknown guns from the house of one Sapliana Chawngthu, 45, of Champhai Venglai locality.

Police sources said, Sapliana claimed that he was a licensed gunsmith and he received the guns to be repaired from some unidentified people from Myanmar. He could not say where these people had gone.

Four Assam Rifles post commander Major P K Pandey said they had received a report about two months back that a huge cache of arms were to be transported from Myanmar to get repaired in Champhai. He said they had been acting on this information.

The man has been booked under arms act and being retained in Champhai police custody.
