Fire rages through market in south Mizoram

Aizawl, Feb 3 : A devastating fire broke out on Wednesday night in Saiha, the headquarters of the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) in southern Mizoram consuming several houses.The fire broke out around 10:40 pm in the Saiha New Market area from the house of one Vanlaltlinga and in a short while the flames completely engulfed 29 houses, most of which were Assam type buildings. About 47 families lost their homes but fortunately there was no loss of precious lives. A fire fighter from the Fire department Zonunsanga, an adult Hrongia and a child Dennis sustained fire injuries.The district administration immediately swung into action while carrying the rescue operations. The prompt response of the Fire department helped to quell the fires and control its spread in the market area.Last night incident occurred two days after the government of Mizoram had held a meeting to take up measures to prevent wild fire in the state.On Tuesday, Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla who is also the chairman of the Mizoram State Level Fire Prevention Committee had convened a meeting in this regard.Wild fire is one of the most disastrous calamities in Mizoram and as a move to check such disaster the state government has taken up measures, said Lal Thanhawla.In this connection, the State Level Fire Prevention Committee of the Mizoram government has asked the people for their cooperation. Jhum farmers in Mizoram have been asked to burn their patches before March 15. The Deputy Commissioners of Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl districts will be informed later about this matter. According to data available, wild fire had broke at 58 places from December 2010 to May 2011 destroying 1259.95 hectares of land.  The state will also observe Fire Prevention Week from 3rd February.
