Poll panel backs off; Mizo CM speaks at function

Aizawl, Jan 30 : Violating the election model code of conduct, Meghalaya Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was seen speaking at the Northeast Consultancy Services (NECS) s first anniversary function at Aijal Club on saturday.

He has been disallowed to do so by the state election commission (SEC) for fear of violations of model code of conduct ahead of the village council elections.
The SEC had on February 24 cracked the whip on North East Consultancy Services, preventing the latter from observing its foundation day on January 28 where Mizoram chief minister and a few other ministers were scheduled to speak.

The SEC had even instructed the district administrator to lock Vanapa Hall, the scheduled venue, from dawn to dusk on Saturday to make sure that the function did not take place.

However, with a little alterations - changing the time and shifting the venue - the anniversary function took place at 1700 hours at Aijal Club.

Prof Lalthantluanga, vice-chancellor of Mizoram University, graced the programme, which doubled as closing function of a four-day workshop on office management and civil works for employees of NECS in its Aizawl, Kohima, Shillong and New Delhi offices. The function however was organised not before obtaining the permission of the SEC.

Speaking at the function, Lal Thanhawla lauded the NECS which, under the leadership of a Mizo, has helped some states draw huge amount of central fund by preparing detailed report projects for the states.

Regretting that Mizoram had lost huge funds due to non preparation of DPRs, the chief minister said that Mizoram government was willing to make use of the NECS expertise in making project reports.

He also highly praised NECS chief managing director Robert Romawia Royte for his efforts in promoting sports among the Mizoram youths and assured all possible assistance in the Aizawl Football Club s preparations to play the Indian League.
