Dr K Lalbiakzuala of the state hospital and medical education department said that mites and ticks, arthropods belonging to the subclass acari or acarina, are carrier of the scrub typhus virus.
"It would be wrong to say that the woman was killed by the mite's bite just as it would be wrong to ascribe malarial death to mosquito bites," Lalbiakzuala said, adding the bite of mites carrying the scrub typhus virus could be fatal if not treated on time.
State health department sources suspected that the victim, Zakhumi, was infected when she was in the Mizoram-Myanmar border town of Champhai last month.
She fell ill on September 12 and was admitted to the Grace Nursing Home on September 21 due to high fever and succumbed to her illness two days later.
Four girls were also taken ill after being bitten by mites in August in Champhai town, after which Rebecca Lalchhanhimi died on August 17 while three of her friends recovered fully after treatment.
