Presbyterian Church founder in Mizoram remembered

Aizawl,  Sep 1 (PTI) 'Ramthar Ni' or 'Mission Day' to commemorate the arrival of Rev D E Jones, a British missionary who established the Presbyterian Church in Mizoram (then known as Lushai country) in 1897, was observed all over the state today.Worship programmes were held in some churches while some others organised feasts to mark the day.Sent by the Welsh Presbyterian Church, Jone, fondly called by the Mizos as 'Zosaphluia' arrived in Mizoram on this day in 1897 and later established here the Presbyterian Church.The first white Christian missionary to enter the Lushai country was Rev William Williams in 1891, a time when a war was on between the British army and the Mizo chiefs, church sources said.Two other missionaries, F.W. Savidge and J.H. Lorraine arrived in Mizoram on January 11, 1894 and they were the first missionaries to propagate Christianity amongst the Mizos, while Jones was remembered for his contributions to establish the Presbyterian Church.
