Former jawans of disbanded battalion to get assistance

Aizawl, Jul 11 (PTI) Mizoram home minister R. Lalzirliana today said that the former jawans of the disbanded second battalion of the Assam Regiment would be given Rs 1,000 per month as financial assistance. In a written reply to a query from the ruling Congress member Lt. Colonel Z. S. Zuala, Lalzirliana said that the government order to this effect was issued on May 25 following the resolution adopted by the state assembly. The 2nd battalion of the Assam Regiment, dominated by Mizos, was disbanded in the early 1960s and disgrunteld with the government, many former soldiers in the disbanded regiment joined the underground Mizo National Front (MNF) when the outfit took up arms against the Indian Union in 1966.
