Increase in infant mortality rate in Saiha district

Aizawl, June 8 (PTI) South Mizoram's remote Saiha district witnessed increase in infant mortality with 105 infant deaths during 2010-2011, state Health department officials said here today. The officials said that many infant deaths might have connection with malnutrition and absence of health care facilities due to its remoteness as most of the deaths occurred in the far-flung areas of this Myanmar-border district. The district also had three maternity deaths, the officials said, adding that out of 24,111 blood samples tested for malaria, 804 were found to be positives while out of the 1,189 blood samples tested for HIV/AIDS , seven people were found to be HIV positives.
