Employer held for cab driver's death

Aizawl, Mar 24 : An employer was nabbed in connection with the unnatural death of a taxi driver, who succumbed to his injuries at Aizawl Civil Hospital yesterday.

Lalramhluna, 39, was found lying unconscious with multiple wounds on the roadside at Kulikawn in the morning of March 18 by residents who were jogging. He was rushed to the hospital and admitted in the ICU. He died in the afternoon of March 22, without regaining consciousness. An unnatural death case has been registered at Kulikawn police station.

Taxi drivers of Kulikawn taxi stand today gathered in front of Kulikawn police station demanding arrest of the taxi’s driver killer and maximum punishment for him. The cabbies hoisted black flags in protest against the incident.

The police assured them that they have been investigating into the case and have held some suspects, including the taxi owner and employer Malsawma.

Unofficial sources said the employer, Malsawma, of Tlangnuam locality, went searching for Lalramhluna on the night of March 17 as he failed to return his taxi till 12:00am. The sources said his employer found him at Kulikawn in a drunken state lying inside the parked taxi. They said he gave him ''a few slaps.'' According to hospital sources, the taxi driver suffered serious injuries on his head, including the socket of his eyes. After a post-mortem, he was buried at the cemetery of Kulikawn where he lived with his paternal uncle.

The taxi driver was a divorcee and is survived by his 12-year-old daughter who is studying in class seven at PC Girls School, sources added.

The Mizoram Taxi Drivers’ Union also issued a statement strongly condemning the brutal killing of the taxi driver. The union expressed agony that a number of taxi drivers have fallen victims to the hands of miscreants in recent times. The Zoram Drivers’ Union also handed out a similar release condemning the murder.
