Mizoram joined the rest of India in celebrating the 62nd Republic Day today with Governor Lt Gen (rtd) M M Lakhera unfurling the Tricolour at the main celebration at Assam Rifles Ground here.
The Governor highlighted various developmental projects the government had initiated, putting emphasis on the ambitious Rs 2873 crore New Land Use Policy that aims to do away with the traditional shifting cultivation and introduce more productive and sustainable way of agriculture.
Emphasising that peace and tranquility were vital for growth and development, the governor said Mizoram was fortunate to have efficient law enforcing agencies and supportive non-governmental organisations, churches, religious institutions, media and the general public who ''have helped maintain our status as one of the most peaceful states'' in the country.
''We must be vigilant against sectarianism of all kinds and elements that can hurt our well maintained social fabric and harmonious co-existence,'' he said.
After unfurling the national flag, the Governor received salute from 30 march past contingents.
He also gave away the Governors gold medal to a traffic policemen and Presidents Award to seven policemen and distributed prizes of basket ball and table tennis competitions organised to mark the 62nd Republic Day.
The day was celebrated in other district capitals and sub-divisional headquarters.
