Mizoram makes effort to be 100% literate

AIZAWL, Dec 3 – Mizoram is exerting maximum effort to overtake Kerala in the literacy rate. The only worry for the Government of Mizoram is in the southern Mizoram area which has a sizable number of illiterate persons.

The Mizoram School Education Department and Mizoram SSA Mission revealed that the number of illiterates is still high in the southern part of the State. The areas where literacy rate is low are the districts of Lawngtlai, Lunglei and Mamit. School Education Minister Lalsawta informed NNN that these three districts had scored very low rate during the 2001 general census. The minister said there are 12,129 persons in Lawngtlai district, 4,200 in Lunglei district and 2845 in Mamit district who are illiterate.

The Mizoram School Education Department in close collaboration with Mizoram SSA Mission is making concerted efforts to make Mizoram top Kerala in literacy rate in India. For this purpose, a Rapid Action for Total Literacy Campaign was today launched across Mizoram to make Mizoram a 100 percent literate State.

The minister added that the desire to become the country’s most literate State has acquired the dimension of a mass movement with all churches, NGOs and student bodies cooperating with the government in this endeavour.

Under the Sarva Shiksha Abhyian, efforts are being made to enroll all children aged between 6 and 14 in schools.
