300 huts torched in Mizoram

AIZAWL: At least 300 deserted huts of the Bru community were set ablaze at Bungthuam in Mizoram on Sunday, in arson that was triggered by the killing of a youth by suspected Bru rebels on November 13.

Around 300 Bru families have crossed over to the neighbouring Tripura ever since the arson began, a police officer in Mamit district said.

Groups of boys went around Bru settlements, scattered across jungles, and set fire to the empty bamboo shelters. “It is impossible to prevent arson everywhere, as the settlements are in inaccessible areas, and the miscreants went in groups through jungle tracks,” he said.
