MNF chief denies link with insurgents

Aizawl, Jul 22 (PTI) The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) today rubbished charges levied against it by Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla that it was behind the formation of the insurgent group -- Sinlung People's Liberation Army (SPLA)-- to disrupt the state assembly polls held last December.

"How could a government worth its name help form an insurgent group which it cannot keep under its control?" MNF chief Zoramthanga said.

No political party in power would take such a step as it would work against the government, he added.

Zoramthanga, a former chief minister, told reporters that he was not aware of the formation of the militant group in 2007 till he was informed by the intelligence.

"Lal Thanhawla's recent statement was aimed at maligning me and my party," he claimed.
